The scientists at the institute work in research, development and transfer projects with universities, research institutions and technology leaders in Bavaria, Germany, and Europe. They research and develop methods, techniques, and tools for reliable, secure and comprehensible software solutions and artificial intelligence applications. fortiss is organised in the legal form of a non-profit limited liability company. The shareholders are the Free State of Bavaria (majority shareholder) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research).
The IIoT competence center of fortiss focuses on the development of computational and networking architectures for advanced IoT applications and use-cases in sectors such as Mobility, Smart Cities, Manufacturing, etc. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: Edge computing, in particular decentralised edge architectures; 6G/deterministic wireless networking; dynamic container orchestration; information-centric networking; Edge AI.
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a:
STUDENT ASSISTANT – FORTISS IIOT LAB,
ORCHESTRATION OF AUTONOMOUS ROBOTICS APPLICATIONS
WITH THE KUBERNETES CODECO FRAMEWORK (M/F/D)
With the growing adoption of IIoT applications,
container orchestration solutions such as
Kubernetes require enhancements and additional
support to handle the dynamic migration of
workloads and system states more effectively.
Addressing these challenges, the fortiss research
institute, within its IIoT competence field, is
actively developing mechanisms to improve the
orchestration of mobile and resource-constrained
Edge environments within the Horizone Europe
CODECO (Cognitive Decentralised Edge-Cloud
Orchestration).
A Manufacturing use case (CODECO P5), led by
fortiss, serves as the foundation for this
research. The project explores how CODECO can
enhance the automation of Mobile Automated Robots
(MARs) by improving their autonomy through
decentralized control. This use case is currently
being deployed in the fortiss IIoT Lab, with the
key objective of increasing MAR fleet efficiency
and adaptability.
The focus of this position is on the further
development of the CODECO manufacturing use-case,
in particular on the setup, implementation and
validation of CODECO within a federated cluster
environment involving MARs.

proposed use-case and its current status of
deployment, and with the fortiss CODECO
demonstrator.
• Get acquainted with tools such as CODECO
and its components, Kubernetes, autonomous
robotics applications.
• Perform experimentation to assess the use
of CODECO in the proposed use-case.
